MTM600 / Environmental Aspects of Transportation
The transport sector is currently heavily fossil fuel dependent and, in advanced economies, accounts for around one quarter of carbon dioxide emissions. This module will provide you with a systematic understanding of the inter-relationships between transport, energy and the environment, along with a comprehensive understanding of the advanced techniques that are used to study these relationships and to determine appropriate mitigation and adaptation policies.
MTM601 / Maritime Transportation Management
This course examines the strategic role of shipping in global supply chains. It focuses on the commercial and logistic environment within which maritime transport operates, organizations which own, operate and manage shipping. It focuses and analysis commercial operation of ships in the bulk and linear shipping fright markets. Case studies are used to improve the student’s strategic logistics skills.

MTM602 / Engineering Economics
This module deals with the economic aspects of the maritime industry. Topics covered include: Patterns of maritime trade; Patterns of shipping markets; and Economics of shipping services. The courses main topics are; General Introduction, The evolution of Maritime Economics, The business of shipping: An historical perspective, Sea Transportation in Theory, The Four shipping market, Maritime Freight market, supply, demand and freight rates, cost, revenue and financial performance.
MTM603 / Report Writing
The course gives extensive information and some clues on the important aspects of writing and presenting scientific reports (thesis). It aims to provide some experience and some skills on reporting by following universally valid systems like APA and others. It provides some information on ethics.
MTM604 / Research Methods
The course defines the understanding of science, engineering and maritime studies, and describes the links between the interrelated technical subjects. Further, it considers the methods of scientific research and focuses on the five methods most widely used for natural sciences, engineering and maritime studies, giving much emphasis on experimental and field studies research methods. It also stresses the importance of integrated research methods. Finally, it gives information on research ethics and on resolving controversies in research.
MTM605 / Special Topics: Biology for Mariners
This course introduces marine organisms and the physical and biological processes that affect them in a context which will be useful for mariners and people who will work close to the sea. The course begins with an investigation into the general scientific concepts behind the formation, understanding, classification and conservation and of marine biological entities. The course then transitions into an exploration of various marine organisms, as well as the adaptations of these organisms have to the marine environment which affects marine traffic and safety. Overall, the emphasis is on the physical, chemical and biological factors behind the formation and maintenance of marine ecosystems, and the complex biological interactions therein.
MTM611 / Seminar
Seminars are given by lecturers, invited speakers and students who are registered to the course. Students’ presentations may be within the scope of their thesis topics.
